Is it September 7th yet?

I’m a fully admitted Vikings homer.

But I also consider myself a realist. A person who can be both subjective while being objective about our favorite football team. And even if I was a full on Vikings pessimist (you know who you are), it’d be hard NOT to be excited about the 2014 season.

The 5-10-1 left a bad taste in our mouths. Mostly because a handful of those games were a play here or there away from us coming out with a W instead of a soul crushing defeat (CHI, CLE, DAL, BAL) or a freakin’ tie to the worst people imaginable (GB).

I didn’t think a full reboot was necessary, I actually thought Leslie had a chance to stay for a 4th year if the defensive staff was overhauled. But looking back now, a factory restore was the better option.

The Wife and I attended a friend’s birthday party last night.

It was good to catch up with old friends. Free beer is also a great thing. And as most conversation topics with groups men sitting around for more than 30 seconds tend to do (especially with beer), we talked football. Jadeveon Clowney is polarizing.

Everyone agrees he’s a physical specimen, but some experts say they wouldn’t touch him because of his motor (or lack thereof) while others would snag him in a heartbeat. The former thinks Clowney took the entire 2013 season off and half-hearted effort – borderline laziness – is part of his character. The latter thinks he has the God-given ability to end up the NFL’s all-time sack leader.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, but no one knows which end of the spectrum is closest.

The Seahawks flipped the script on how to build defenses. Well… That might be a little far, but they definitely found a different way to build a mousetrap. A damn effective mousetrap.

Traditionally, NFL teams have looked to build their defense from the front backwards – have an elite front seven that can get to the QB and stop the run. The thinking was that any Tom, Dick, or Harry can play defensive back behind that.

Seattle ran that thinking backwards: Have two long, physical corners, throw in a MORE physical strong safety (long too), and put a future HOF at centerfield behind all of em.

Any Tom, Dick, and Harry can play in front of THAT.
